The Course!  For The Sound Designers

For digital audio / music production there is a software synthesizer which is also popularly known as a soft-synth, plug-in or a computer program. In the past one required a dedicated hardware to create sound or music but advances in processing speed are allowing computer based soft-synths to accomplish the same role. The benefit of Soft-synths is that it is a lot cheaper and more portable as compared to specified computer hardware; it also provides a smoother to interface with other music software such as music sequencers.

A couple of soft-synths are predominantly sample based, and generally have more power compared to the hardware, this happens because computers have less inhibition with memory in comparison to a dedicated hardware synthesizer. A few of the sample based synthesizers have their own sample libraries with huge GB in size. Most of them have features that sound exactly like the real world instruments.

With the advancement in technology one can generate a sound files “off-line” i.e. without it being in real time or “live”. To demonstrate, the input can be a MIDI file and the output can feature as an MP3 file or a WAV file. So when anyone plays an MP3 or a WAV file, they are only playing a pre-calculated wave-form(s) for which the computations are already completed. The benefit of the off-line synthesis comes in handy in a way that it helps the software, hence you can consume maximum time to what it takes to generate the sound that comes out, this increases the quality of the results.

Though numerous software synthesizers also known as VST – plug-ins are readily available in the market but we have selected the few best ones to help you reach your aspirations. What you need to pick & choose only one synthesizer which you like the most and stick with it. The reason is that almost 80% of all the synthesizers work on the same structure & have almost similar functionality.

If you could understand the synthesis thoroughly, it would give you the skills & make you capable enough to juice out many advantages to your benefit. You will have the power in your hands to create our own unique sound or a sample which could be used & featured in any musical genre categorically for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) or a Cinematic Sound. And Beatpro offers you that education to learn about the amazing Synthesis.

The Course Content

Introduction of Soft-synths

We would introduce you to the style of the course and provide you with an overview of the instrument, covering the main display areas, where you can browse & edit the synth presets.

1. Tone generator (Oscilattors)

Introduction to Sylenth 1’s oscillator section controls where you would be explained on their functionality and make you understand with an example to use both parts to create one single patch.

2. Filters

We would give you an introduction to the different types of filters that are available and how their usage would affect the sound production, We would also explain how to use the controls and their benefits.

3. Arpeggiator and Effects

You would then be given an understanding of the central display area, where you would be shown the application of different effects. Some of them would include arpeggiation, chorus, EQ, delay, distortion, compression phasing and reverb.

4. Envelopes

You may then get to understand how to modulate with an in-depth look at various envelopes. You may begin with a very commonly used amplitude envelope where it changes the level over time.

Further, you can explore and check out the usage of other modulation envelopes to manipulate the oscillator pitch and filter frequency.

5. Low-Frequency Oscillator

You would be provided with knowledge about different oscillator waveforms in deeper detail and along with a guide to the LFOs which are featured in Sylenth-1. You would be shown how to set up the classic dubstep wobble bass type effects, and how to set up stacked modulation, where the other parameters are controlled by one modulator.

6. Glide, Misc Modulation and more

You will learn the functionality of the remaining front panel controls which would include- the wheels, portamento, settings and polyphony options. You then get to create a cool musical patch in the second half of the lesson where-in we would get to combine all the features of this & some from the previous lessons.

7. Exercise

A groovy dubstep bass preset will be produced by applying many of the techniques taught to you as a practical example. You get to learn how to make a simple but great-sounding arpeggiated lead patch by using all the things in perspective. Focusing more on an evolving pad-style preset, you again get to execute & create a great lead sound.
